The Facility of Radiation Standards (FRS) in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) provides beta-ray calibration fields for the customers to calibrate dosemeters. Two different types of beta-ray irradiation systems, so called BSS2 and JBS, have been installed and operated in the FRS. They have quite different types of the beta-ray radiation sources, which might be attributed to variations in dosimetric quantities. Variations in these quantities would affect the calibration factor of a dosemeter. A comparison of dosimetric quantities for beta reference radiation fields of both beta-ray irradiation systems was made, in order to investigate how these quantities differ between them and how much differences affect calibration results. With regard to the depth dose curve which is one of the key dosimetric quantities, it was found that they showed different profiles between both systems reflecting their characteristics. This implies that the difference between two systems might affect the calibration of dosemeters, especially one with more than 400 mg/cm$$^2$$ thickness or one made of high-Z materials for $$^{90}$$Sr/$$^{90}$$Y field.

We developed a web-based CT dosimetry system, WAZA-ARI, which calculates doses to average-sized Japanese adults (male and female) as well as a four-year-old girl. The system is being upgraded to a new version, WAZA-ARI 2, incorporating several new features. To enable the dose calculation for a wider range of subjects, WAZA-ARI 2 utilizes voxelized hybrid phantoms developed by Florida University (0, 1, 5, 10 and 15 years old, both sexes) in addition to the JAEA voxel phantoms of the average-sized Japanese male and female. It is also capable of calculating doses to adults with small, large and extra-large body sizes. The system computes tissue doses on user's request referring to the dose coefficient datasets that have been calculated using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). As the phantoms used represent physiques of Asian population, WAZA-ARI 2 is appropriate to calculate patient doses in Asian countries.

The WAZA-ARI is a dose calculator of medical exposures on X-ray CT examinations, which is the web-based program based on the simulation data of voxel phantoms of Japanese adults and a 4-y girl. After the development, the WAZA-ARI has been installed in a web server of National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), and opened to the public as trial uses on Dec 2012. The user authentication function and the data input pages by users have been adding to the WAZA-ARI to store the calculated data and the inputted data of doses and frequencies of X-ray CT examinations into the database on medical exposure in NIRS for the analyses of the CT exposures. The use of these functions and WAZA-ARI II, which can calculate the doses of different patients' body sizes, will provide the basic and useful data on the CT exposures for the radiation protection in medicine, because the portion of CT doses in the overall medical exposures are relatively high compared to other radiological diagnoses.
